Market Day

Vicki buys her first avocado in Peru

Today we went to one of the huge open air markets that spans several city blocks. It’s the cheapest place to buy fruits and vegetables, some meats, and lots of other things. We also visited Makro, a new wholesaler like Sam’s Club or Costco where you can get rice in 50 kg bags (110 lbs)! We bought a few toiletries and hamburger on sale for $1.63/lb. The market is busy, crowded, noisy (honking trucks and taxis, music, loudspeaker promotions), brightly colored, and smelly (mostly diesel with a scent of fruit and meat), all of which contribute to sensory overload. We bought avocados, tomatoes, a few herbs and spices, apples, mangoes, pineapple, can’t remember what else. It takes a lot of time and planning to get the best prices.

Vicki is a little homesick tonight. She made us a nice dinner with some of our supplies of the day and I sliced up a small red ají pepper to spice up the hamburger. I tried ONE seed and my lips and tongue were burning for an hour, as well as my nose because I evidently wiped it with a tissue before washing my hands. The dish was quite good, however.

Also today we had lunch with the Riches, who started a church and school in Arequipa and first drew our interest here. We met Samuel, the director of another Christian school who offered the school facilities for me to teach a class for Christian groups on building a Web site. I may help with the school’s Web site also.

One last note: me gusta USAA more than ever. I’ve found several ATMs where we can withdraw cash in soles with ZERO transaction fee and get the spot exchange rate for the day. That is by far the safest, most convenient, and most cost-efficient way to exchange money.
