House hunting

21 Sep

The locals say that the best way to find a house here is to look at the classifieds in the Sunday El Pueblo. Brother Sarolli, who speaks English quite well, was kind of enough to call on several properties for us and we spent most of the day looking at them. Several were in Cayma, which is the nicest part of town, but were quite small or run-down for the price. One was still under construction and had a lot of construction around. Apartment prices are higher if the building has an elevator. We were hoping to find a house in a neighborhood with some green space. There is one such possibility in Sachaca but it’s 25% more than we are hoping to pay. On the plus side, we would love to be near the missionary families we’ve met in Sachaca. On the other hand, it’s well outside walking distance to downtown and the bigger markets. The SIM guest house in Yanahuara has been an ideal location: 20 min walk to downtown and lots of local shops as well as larger markets nearby.

The best possibility from today was a 4th floor apartment further out in Yanahuara. It has good access to markets and shops, is well served by buses and taxis, and is very near a Christian school which might be a possibility for our kids. It’s a bit of a hike to downtown, but it could work. The street is a little busy, but that can be a good thing, too. The bedrooms are toward the back, so street noise should not be as much of a factor. The main problem is it’s pretty small. There are three bedrooms with built-in closets, but not much room for desks, much less my office. However… if we were to rent both the 3rd and 4th floors, which would still be less than the house in Sachaca, it could be a really outstanding space. Also the view from the living / dining room is the most pleasant of any we saw today.

Please pray for wisdom for us about this! We are anxious to get in our own place. We don’t really have enough information yet to make a proper decision, but we need to find something this week. Thank you for praying!

We will be praying for your decision regarding a home. Thanks for these updates, David. I am uplifted reading simply reading these blogs. Your service and dedication to God encourages me (Heb 10:24-25). We are praying for your ministry in Peru.
