Quakin’ again

2 Apr

Well, that wasn’t exactly an aftershock. I heard it coming (quakes sound like rollers of some kind), then it hit about five seconds later. I started counting slowly and logged at least 45 seconds of shaking. Timothy says it was worse than last night, but Daniel says it was less severe. The earthquake tracker says it was 7.6 tonight vs. 8.2 last night, again centered just off the coast at the Peru – Chile border. I hope the quakes don’t get any closer because I was starting to rethink my decision about staying in the house. The equivalent magnitude of yesterday’s quake as felt in Arequipa was about 5. I cannot imagine being near the center of anything 7+, as I recall how much damage the 6.9 Northridge quake did, and California has earthquake building codes…. However, Arequipa survived a 6.9 in 2001 and mostly the 100+ year old buildings were damaged. Still, it’s unsettling. A lot of people here say the 2001 quake was actually stronger, but that the official magnitude was deliberately underreported so the national government would not to have send emergency relief funds as required by law for anything over 7.0. I guess that makes Arequipa “too big to bail.”
